Diatonic Studios is seeking a PHP developer!
Written by David Orr
Friday, 16 March 2007

To help complete development of the database, I need someone who is skilled with PHP to help me code a script that will allow a flash file to stream each individual file from the site, to allow the user to preview the file before downloading it. I have the flash file designed, so there is little (if any) need for a flash programmer at this time.

Unfortunately, it is not in the site's budget to be able to pay someone for their work at this time. The revenue this site generates is just enough to pay for the hosting and to keep it self-sustained. Although my goal is to reach a point where I can afford to hire a staff, don't apply for the position if you're expecting some form of monetary compensation. If you do "get the job" and work well, I may offer you the spot as the "official" PHP programmer on the site, since this will not be the last time I'll need assistance programming PHP.

If you're interested, send me an email at davidorr[at]davidorr.net. I don't have any specific format requirement for your email, just be sure to mention that you're applying for the spot in the title (something like "Application for PHP programmer" would be fine), and in the body introduce yourself and tell me about your experience with PHP. Nothing too lengthy, Just a few sentences outlining what you have done is fine. Also, it would be beneficial to include a link or an attachment with something you've programmed.

I will read through every application I receive, and will personally reply to each, regardless of if I am interested in hiring you or not. If you have any questions, feel free to send me an email or reply to this post. Thanks for your time, I look forward to hearing from you!

The Music Database
Written by David Orr

I'm currently doing some "under the hood" development with the database, which includes integrating a flash player to stream each audio file (so users can preview a track before having to download it).

It'd be great to hear what you'd like to see in the music database in terms of features. I can't guarantee anything, but I'll certainly try to impliment any features you want.

Hey everyone, it’s been a while since I last updated, but I HAVE been quite busy with music! I’m working on a few upcoming projects with a few very gifted flash programmers and artists. In the meantime, I’m going to briefly discuss where this website is going.

For about a year now I’ve wanted to start a giant music database for independent developers of games and movies to use in their projects. Although charging royalties has it’s obvious perks, I think it’s important to offer royalty-free quality music and sound. This will offer upcoming programmers and artists to bring a higher level of professionalism to their works, and upcoming musicians exposure. It’s a win/win situation.

However, there are obstacles I have been trying to tackle for a little while now which I think I’ve finally tackled. The largest obstacle was finding enough web space and hosting to offer reliable and speedy music upload and downloads. I switched over to 1and1 hosting a while back (which offers me 10 GB of storage and 300 GB of data transfer per month), and after testing and using it for a while, I feel confident it will offer the site enough growing room for a little while.

My other problem was finding ways to draw visitors to this website. No matter how useful a website is, it isn’t much use if only a handful of people visit it each day. Since I’ve been collaborating with some flash authors lately, I’ve brought a lot more exposure to this website. Currently, this website is averaging about 30,000 visitors per month, and that figure is rising. Something worth noting is that many of these hits are from Flash authors coming to find music to add to their project.

Keeping all of this in mind, I think now is a great time to shift the direction of this site a little bit, and try and bring it to a new level. If you come here in the next few days and things look a bit jumbled up, don’t be alarmed. New changes are on their way!
